A brief history of the Department

Economics as a discipline evolved from what was once called “political economy” in the days of Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill. The study of economics within the discipline of civics was sustained till a separate discipline was formed in the early 20th century. Economics as a subject of study in B.A. (General) was started in 1919 and in 1948 permission was accorded for introduction of B.A. (Economics Honours) Course. The Department of Economics of Hooghly Mohsin College is well renowned for the performance of the students. At present the department has a total of four faculty members. Apart from teaching the faculty members are actively engaged in research and guiding the PhD students. The academic environment of this department prepares our students to groom for life ahead. Our aim is to train the students who are ready for the opportunities in the market, be it a desire to pursue Post -Graduate Course in reputed institutes in the country and abroad or be it jobs in teaching profession, public sector, corporate world and even in well reputed NGOs. Many of our Alumni have performed exceptionally well in Post – Graduate Courses in different well ranked Universities in the Country and abroad. Many of our Alumni have distinguished themselves both in academic and many spheres across the country and the World.
