Physics Department

A brief history of the Department

Even though Hooghly Mohsin College was founded in 1836, the teaching of Physics begins in this college only in the year 1907, with the introduction of I.Sc. Course. In 1913, this was elevated to the Graduate Level offering B.Sc (pass) degree. Full-fledged BSc Honours course was instituted in 1926. Since then, the department has grown rapidly and has been recognized as one of the finest physics department in West Bengal at the graduate level. Among its many illustrious students, the name of Professor J. N. Bhar stands out both for his scholastic brilliance and his eminence as a teacher at the institute of radio Physics and Electronics, Calcutta University. Prof. Shyamal Gupta a well-known solid-state theorist had been a faculty member of this department before joining Presidency College Kolkata.

At present the department teaches both the Honours and General courses in Physics as per the syllabus of the University of Burdwan. The department is consisted of four experimental laboratory, one computer laboratory and seminar library.
