Physiology Department

A brief history of the Department

The Department of Physiology is established in 1961 in the post-independence era, sincerely follow the motto set by its predecessors. Department of Physiology, Hooghly Mohsin College has a transformative impact on society through continual innovation in education, research, creativity, and entrepreneurship. The department founded as “a department of the highest order” as evidenced by transforming a pass course teaching department to Honours course teaching as well as Post graduate course teaching one within a decade of 1990s. Presently a number research students completed Ph.D. works.

The primary purpose of the department is to provide a learning environment in which faculty, staff and students can discover, examine critically, preserve and transmit the knowledge, wisdom and values that will help ensure the survival of this and future generations and improve the quality of life for all. The department seeks to help students to develop an understanding and appreciation for the complex cultural and physical worlds, in addition to its core courses, in which they live and to realize their highest potential of intellectual, physical and human development. It also seeks to attract and serve students from diverse social, economic and ethnic backgrounds and to be sensitive and responsive to those groups which have been underserved by higher education. The existing curricula of the subject are reviewed and updated regularly. Newer special papers were introduced by the department in post-Graduate curriculum. Features of the syllabus are regularly designed and modified as per the need of the hour. General transmission and generation of knowledge are the primary mission and goal of the department. Sincere teaching-learning methods in this department always try to impart in-depth inquiry and to instill in the developing minds the radical spirit of not accepting any idea without rationale, a tradition emphatically demonstrated by teachers. In addition to curriculum, the department is trying to fulfill the basic objective of imparting value-based education, instilling analytical power in the students’ mind enabling them to think independently and spread their wings to become leading researchers, professionals and teachers all over the country, if not the globe.
As the pioneering and flagship department representing “The University of Burdwan,” this department take additional responsibilities of nurturing and cooperating with Physiology Departments of other far-distant colleges like Suri Vidyasagar College, Raniganj TDB College, Katwa College, Bishnupur Ramananda College, Bankura Christian College, academically. Accordingly, the only PG department of physiology representing “The University of Burdwan”, started its journey on and from 1997-98 sessions in this very college as a light-house, as it were.
