Zoology Department of Hooghly Mohsin College originated as the “Department of Biological Sciences” during the year of 1948 in intermediate course. This department has a glorious history of academic excellence. It has inherited a rich tradition of scholarship and teaching in various fields of knowledge of the subject and it has been serving innumerable pupils for the last fifty years and more.
This Department can legitimately boast of the memorable contribution from many versatile Zoologists and Laboratory Personnel, who efficiently guided their students so as to help them find suitable and important places in the society. These eminent personalities include Late Ananta Bandyopadhyay, Dr. Mohitosh Bandyopadhyay, Dr. Sujit Dasgupta and Dr. Ajoy Roy etc.
Zoology honours degree course was initiated during the year of 1969 and M.Sc. degree course in Zoology was introduced in the year of 2015. Zoology is offered both as an Honours and Elective subject to the UG bio-science students. The teacher-student ratio of this department is 1:8 and the success rate of the students of this department is nearly 100%. The performance of the students in the University examinations over the years has been quite remarkable. Students of this department are now securing their places in NET, SET, GATE examinations and receiving scholarships at both the national and international levels. Students from this department are now carrying out their research work in foreign countries and are also placed in several reputed colleges and research institutes as faculty members and research scientists respectively.
All the faculty members of the department are engaged in research works of various types beside the normal teaching process and they regularly publish articles indifferent national and international levels. They are untiring in their pursuit of knowledge and in their persistent efforts to keep themselves continually updated in their respective specialized disciplines.

Students of this department are now securing their places in NET (Rohini Nandi, Bratati Bhattacharjee, Tapasi Das), SET, GATE (Biswajit Ghosh) examinations and receiving scholarships at both the national and international levels. Students from this department are now carrying out their research work in foreign countries and are also placed in several reputed colleges and research institutes as faculty members and research scientists respectively.Students (Nargis Sultana, Sohini Biswas, Naazmul Hussain)of this department are also placed in the jobs of Government sectors.
