ZACHARIAH HOSTEL

Zachariah Hostel, built in 1836, is a spacious, well furnished Government Hostel of Hooghly Mohsin College for boys. Apart from hygienic foods and lodging, the hostel provides recreational facilities including TV, Common room. Reading room, Visitors’ room, Carrom Board, Cricket, football, indoor games and outdoor Badminton Court etc. Outstation students taking admission in Hooghly Mohsin College can apply for accommodation in this hostel.

This hostel offers excellent boarding and lodging facilities to the students. All the rooms are specious and well furnished. The hostel premises are covered with lush green vegetation and well-maintained garden.

Each student is provided with a study table, a chair and a bed. Each room has an attached cupboard and book-shelf on one side of the bed. The hostel is built in a manner so as to provide natural light and ventilation to all rooms. Electricity, drinking water, and bathrooms with 24 hours running water facility are available.

Very eminent personalities like Syed Shamsul Hudas – an educationist, Judge of Calcutta High court, Member of Governor’s Executive Council (1912-19), Member of Imperial Legislative Council (1911-15), Member of Bengal Legislative Council (1921), Md. Shahidullah – an internationally acclaimed educationist, Professor of Bengali at Dhaka University (1921) & Rajshahi University, Muzaffar Ahmed – freedom fighter & Communist leader (1913), Syed Sakhawat Hossain – (1877-78) a graduate of Hooghly. Mohsin College. He inspired her wife Begum Rokeya for spreading women education in Bengal. Dr. Firdous Ahmed – Professor of physiology. Surendranath College, Kolkata and Abdul Ghafoor Nassakh – An eminent Urdu poet, writer and civil servant in 19th century etc. are some of the notable alumni of this hostel.

Zachariah hostel remains the part of a great history in respect of its boarders’ achievements. This hostel is well maintained by Dr.. Purushottam Pramanik, Principal, Hooghly Molisin College and Dr. Omar Ghazali, Associate Professor, Post Graduate & Research Department of Urdu, Hooghly Mousin College.

 

KLD Hostel

Kanai Lal Dutta Boys’ Hostel (KLD Hostel), adjacent to the college campus, was established by the then British Government from 1860 to 1865. It is a Hindu hostel with a total boarding capacity of around 55 to 60 students. The hostel provides an economical, healthy and safe accommodation to the students, coming to study in Hooghly Mohsin College from a long distance. The boarders of the hostel include both Under Graduate and Post Graduate students of Arts, Science, Commerce and Law sections. Comprising of four buildings – two main buildings and two annex buildings – the hostel has 18 rooms along with kitchen and dining room. Among these 18 rooms, 12 rooms may house 4 boarders each and the rest 6 rooms are with 2 boarders’ capacity. Seats in the Hostel are allotted in accordance with the existing government rules. There is also a library in the hostel which provides almost all the books as per the requirement of the boarders. The hostel has a playground in which the boarders play various games in their leisure time like cricket, football, volleyball, badminton etc. Besides these, other facilities like Common Room, TV, etc are also available in the Hostel. Meals are provided at the hostel as per time given. Ragging is strictly prohibited at the hostel premises.

During the long span of around 160 years, this century old hostel is proud to have provided accommodation to innumerable renowned intellectuals who are present in different parts of the world contributing richly to all walks of life.
