A brief history of the Department
The department of Urdu, of Hooghly Mohsin College Chinsurah, was established since the inception of erstwhile Hooghly College in 1836 by The British Government, Urdu along with other subjects and languages, such as English, Bengali, Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian Islamic studies and History was taught at UG level. Urdu was remained taught as a language & Subject when the college was renamed as Hooghly Mohsin College. After partition of India, the Urdu department, along with department of Arabic, Persian, and Islamic studies was closed down in 1947. Teaching of Urdu was again started in 1956, by a teacher of Sanskrit department, Prof. HiraLal, and after some time the government of West Bengal, appointed a teacher Prof. Abdur Rauf in 1956, thus Urdu department was revived. In 1970, Honours in Urdu was introduced. A full-Fledged department started in 2007, when post-Graduation in Urdu was introduced along with facility of research and PH. D and its Course work was allowed in 2009. Since then, a full-fledged University department of Urdu under the University of Burdwan is functioning smoothly.
